I already have a Canon Rebel Ti 35mm SLR but am starting to shop around for a digital. I like Canon and am used to their format so I don’t really want to switch to Nikon but I might consider it.

I want something that has excellent photo quality (esp good color), has 100% Manual, P, Tv, Av, and Auto functions, is somewhat lighter/ more portable than most super-professional cameras, and not too expensive. I’m planning to buy used or refurbished and probably a couple years old so my target price is around 0. Though I am an amateur now, I would like a camera that I can keep growing with and possibly use professionally… probably something entry level but with a lot of options.

I was playing around with a friend’s Canon Rebel XT but it seems a little dated (4-5 years old, only 8 mp, color is so-so). It would be helpful if someone could explain pros/cons of Canon’s line of DSLRs (D vs Rebel) as well as comparable Nikon models and what features are actually useful and necessary.
