I don’t expect posh materials at this price point but some surface providing a better grip would have been nice. One important point though is that because of the materials used, it makes the camera extremely light-weight (although you will find with heavier lenses it will feel out of balance somewhat). However, despite the lack of a rubberized handgrip, you will find it hard to dislike this camera. And it I think it provides an overall better and more straight-forward shooting experience than thte Nikon D3100. The controls are pretty straight-forward on this camera. And I always like Canon’s menu system, very intuitive. It has plenty of auto controls for newbie photographers but of course has a full manual suite of controls so it’s perfect for students or folks in general who want to learn photography and want a camera they can grow with. In terms of the performance, this DSLR impressed me. Overall operation is very quick, shot-to-shot times are decent, and the autofocus is very fast. It comes with a nice chunky battery which will give which goes a long time before needing to be charged again. The viewfinder is 95% coverage and isn’t the greatest but I found it to be satisfactory. www.learningdslrvideo.com I was excited when I got some boxes in the mail, the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i/600D. Both are very comparable entry level DSLR’s. Both are about the same price. I know all I talk about on this site is Canon so I wanted to really give Nikon some air time now that is appears they are getting more serious about video on their DSLR’s. I think it would be great to have a bunch of Nikon D5100 tutorials on this site. Both of the cameras are really close in cost and they both have features like 1080p video and flip out screens. The Nikon doesn’t have all the frame rates that the Canon has but Nikon appears to have better low light performance. I was all set to spend a ton of time shooting with both and doing a really thorough review when I learned something shocking about the Nikon. You can’t shoot video in a full manual exposure on the Nikon like you can with the Canon EOS cameras. (You sort of can watch this video) The non manual movie mode is kind of a deal breaker for me, but instead of boxing it back up and sending it back, I wanted to still run a few comparisons first. This is my first time purchasing a DSLR. I have a somewhat low budget. I have been browsing the canon line for a few weeks, researching. Today I decided on the Canon EOS Rebel T1i as my final choice. I had thought Canon was the best choice for me as far as entry-level DSLRs go, because I had read somewhere that Canons have the most beginner-friendly interface. I had also heard that additional Nikon lenses, flashes, etc. are more expensive and are not always universal to their body models. But I have seen many comparisons of Nikons vs. Canons, and realized that I should probably look into Nikons at least a little before making my purchase. What I really don’t want is to buy a camera and then become too frustrated or confused with its controls to use it to its full potential. This camera is going to be for casual use, nothing fancy. Just to take my pictures and have them look nice, maybe some creative photography, make good quality YouTube videos. So, to anyone with experience in the SLR market: Are Canons easier to use or figure out than Nikons? And to someone with a lower budget, would Canon be a better choice as far as further upgrade costs go? And if I were to look into Nikons, what would be some cameras equivalent to the T1i in the same price range? I am so new to this and would really appreciate the help!
I guess I could also consider throwing Sony into the mix… I hadn’t really looked into that one, but how does it compare with the other two as far as the points I already mentioned?
