How important is dynamic range when selecting a DSLR? D5000 vs D700 vs?
I am shopping for a DSLR, and have questions relating to dynamic range:
1) I like to shoot contrasty scenes such as sunny-beaches-and-deserts / shiny-vehicles-in-the-sun / bright-city-lights-at-dusk, etc
- My current point-and-shoot does not give the greatest results, even when my shots are very carefully and correctly exposed. And I have tried close bracketing.
- If I expose for the highlights, the shadows look dark to me. If I expose for nice tones in the shadows, the highlights are blown out.
- I really want to see good detail in both the highlights and the shadows in a single shot, preferably without the extra work of post-processing, such as curve manipulation, HDR, etc.
>> Is it worthwhile for me to buy an FX camera such as Nikon D700, or will the just-above-entry-level Nikon D5000 give pretty much the same dynamic range performance?
[I know the Fujifilm S3 and S5 have great dynamic range, but Fuji is not making these cams anymore, and also I have heard the sharpness and resolution are somewhat lacking.]
2) How much improvement is likely in dynamic range of DSLR’s over the next 2 to 5 years? Is a major improvement in DR just around the corner and I should wait just a bit before splurging on a full-frame model this year?
Thanks for your information, suggestions and recommendations.
